Rotary Lawn Mowers

Rotary Lawn Mower
Rotary Lawn Mowers - The Early Days
Executive Summary By Steven Blades

The first lawn mower was invented in 1827. Early lawn mowers of the time were push mowers that required the owner to guide the lawn mower across their lawns, as the turning wheels would also turn a series of blades that systematically trimmed the grass on the home owner's lawn.

However, as time went on the lawn mower continued to evolve. In 1859, a man named Thomas Green invented the first mechanized lawn mower, which ran on a chain. Taking this idea a step further, Elwood McGuire of Richmond, Indiana designed and patented the first "modern" push mower.

The tragedy of Stacy's idea is that, had he replaced the saw blade with standard rotary blades, he would have truly invented the modern lawn mower that you and I use today.

Executive Summary By Brian Holland

Lawn Mowers Rotary cut mowers are designed for difficult to cut grass which may contain weeds, long grasses, mosses and damp patches, in other words a typical household back garden. The lawn mowers rotary cut produces grass clippings which are automatically placed in a grass cutting collecting box, for easy emptying after the lawn has been mowed.

Rotary lawn mowers can be either petrol or electrically powered. Torn grass will brown where it has been torn, whilst cut grass will remain green.

Rotary mowers are standard equipment for parks and large grass areas, as the rotary mower copes well with all types of grass and turf quality, from damp and uneven grasses to dry tough grass and weeds.

  1. Rotary lawn mowers are most often compared to reel lawn mowers, and have advantages and disadvantages as any other type of lawn mower would. A rotary mower has a completely horizontal fan-style blade that simultaneously straightens the grass with its air flow and cuts the grass off straight across. This is contrary to other mowers, like the reel, which lays grass flat and cuts downward into it to cut it. Rotary lawn mowers are always powered mowers (unlike reels) because it takes a motor to move the blade in a fan-like motion.
